Groenewegen sprints to third place, Boom remains leader in Tour of Britain

Dylan Groenewegen finished third in the sixth stage of the Tour of Britain. In a hectic final, Team LottoNL-Jumbo’s 24-year-old rider sprinted to a podium finish. Moreover, the Dutch outfit succesfully defended Lars Boom’s leaders jersey.

GC-leader Boom was happy with the outcome of the race. “Our guys did a great job today”, he said. “We controlled the race and I could save some energy for tomorrow’s stage. That’s very important.”

The bad weather caused a hectic final. “I was lucky that Gijs van Hoecke could still help me after a tough day. Despite that, it was difficult to stay in front in the final”, Groenewegen described the last kilometres. “Furthermore, it was slippery in the last corner. That’s why Caleb Ewan and Fernando Gaviria got some space. I tried my best to close the gap in the sprint, but more than a third place wasn’t possible anymore.”

Tomorrow will be an important day for the GC-contenders. Boom is already looking forward to the stage. “We have a strong team. We showed ourselves in a good way today. Nevertheless it will be difficult to defend the jersey tomorrow. I expect many attacks.”
