Team LottoNL-Jumbo starts collaboration with Optiek van Wely

Team LottoNL-Jumbo has started a collaboration with Optiek van Wely. The optician from Roosendaal, the Netherlands, will support the team in all things to do with optometry.

Diederik van der Heijden
"It has always been surprising to me that top sports pays so much attention to posture and muscles, yet so little attention to the eyes,” says Diederik van der Heijden, managing director Optiek van Wely. “Eyes can make the difference between winning or losing. Our optometrists are not only specialized in good eyesight, but also in the health of the eye, as they are in the collaboration between eyes and the brain. We are currently busy with fixation disparity, where the collaboration between the eyes and brain are fine-tuned to the smallest detail. Being able to look further ahead, and to be able to signalize things earlier can contribute to a good descend.

“Team LottoNL-Jumbo stands for innovation and we want to contribute to that with our innovative vision on sight and to translate the development of the eyes onto sports.”

Tom Leezer
Team LottoNL-Jumbo’s medical staff is pleased with the collaboration that will support the riders in being able to cycle safely. As a wearer of glasses himself, Tom Leezer knows the importance of good eyesight: “Sharp eyesight is very important for a cyclist and can make the difference during the course of the race. Good eyesight enables you to ride closer to the one in front of you and to save, for example during the team time trial at the World Championships, more energy in the wheel.”
