Deception in Scheldeprijs after exclusion Groenewegen and co

The Scheldeprijs has ended in a disappointment for Team LottoNL-Jumbo. By passing a closing railroad crossing, a large group of riders was excluded from the race by the jury. Amongst them were Amund Grondahl Jansen, Timo Roosen and top favourite Dylan Groenewegen.

The latter had expected much more of the race of course. “I’m very disappointed in how it went. I can understand the decision of the jury. You don’t need to continue racing when the lights come on. The fact is, however, that the first group also continued riding. Moreover, we drove close to sixty kilometres per hour. If you suddenly break at this speed, chances are that it goes wrong. I’m in favour of recording time differences in such cases, so that crossing at closing railway crossings is nipped in the bud."

Sports director Addy Engels called the exclusion of his three riders a 'decapitation' of the team. "I didn’t see it happen, but Dylan announced via the radio that he was excluded from the race. The jury's confirmation was long overdue, but it eventually came. At that moment you have to leave those guys behind and draw up an alternative plan for the remaining riders."

That plan was to breakaway from the peloton in the last kilometres. "Jos van Emden and Maarten Wynants did, but they didn’t manage to stay away. I praise their effort, but even with a complete team this was a tough task. These were unforeseen circumstances."
