Jansen just misses out on handsome result in GP Wallonia

Enrico Battaglin finished eleventh in the Grand Prix of Wallonia. With this, the Italian was today’s best ranked rider of Team LottoNL-Jumbo. Amund Grondahl Jansen, 23, was on the verge of a good result, but he was caught one kilometre before the finish while riding in seventh place. The win went to Belg Tim Wellens.

Jansen joined Maarten Wynants in the first group after the peloton was broken by echelons. Wynants was caught 26 kilometers before the finish, Jansen was still in front. Eventually he had to leave his fellow escapees on the climb of the Tienne Aux Pierres.

Sports director Frans Maassen found that Jansen was very attentive when the peloton broke into echelons. "He did well", Maassen said. "He is not a big climber but he only got caught in the last kilometre. He races well and still makes great strides. I wish he had reached the finish line in 7th position."

Maassen's compliment made the young Norwegian smile. He had also noted the progression. "I joined men like Wellens and Teuns in a true Ardennes final. That's definitely something to look back at with satisfaction", said Jansen, who eventually crossed the finish in the back of the peloton.
