LottoNL-Jumbo avoids another setback in Tour of Britain

Team LottoNL-Jumbo started Tuesday’s third stage of the Aviva Tour of Britain with three riders, after the other half of the team had to abandon the fight during stage two. Bram Tankink, Steven Kruijswijk and Koen Bouwman did what they had to do: reach the finish line.

“The course wasn’t selective enough for our three riders and so we couldn't really do much more today,” Sports Director Nico Verhoeven said after the 216-kilometer stage from Cockermouth to Floors Castle, which was won by Team Sky sprinter Elia Viviani.

Crash
The peloton had a scare by a crash in the final five kilometres, but Tankink, who finished 22nd, soon realised that he didn’t have to worry.

“Steven barely avoided the crash and Koen was only hindered by it. I rode in front of the spill. I’m glad we didn’t lose more men. Today, with three, I already felt a bit lonely in the peloton.”

Ambitious
Verhoeven remains ambitious, despite the fact that his team only consists of three men. “There are still opportunities for us. The uphill finish provides chances for our riders. That day will determine the overall.”

Stage four
Wednesday’s stage four will see the peloton take on a 217-kilometre stage from Edinburgh to Blyth.

“Tomorrow’s stage is a little easier than today’s. In the beginning, there are some climbs, but the final half has all the ingredients for a bunch kick. We want and need to stay alert and attentive, though. You never know what can happen.”
