Primoz Roglic takes the lead in Algarve

Primoz Roglic gained the leader’s yellow jersey in the Volta ao Algarve today in Portugal. The Slovenian of team LottoNL-Jumbo did so thanks to his third place in the time trial behind winner Jonathan Castroviejo and world champion Tony Martin. Team Movistar’s Castroviejo won with four seconds over Martin and five over Roglic, who took the lead with 22 seconds on Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky).

"This was a good result and it’s nice to take the leader’s jersey,” Roglic said. “We have a strong team and I believe we can hold the lead through until the end.”

He faces two more stages. Today’s time trial course covered 18 kilometres around Sagres.

“First, I took it a bit easy, there were many twists and turns. I had to be careful, you have to stay on your bike to win,” he explained. “As always, I want to finish strongly. I took many risks, but watched out in the final."

"After a bad day in the Valenciana stage race last week, this is a good result. I was not good enough to be able to help the team in Valenciana during the team time trial, but it's nice to prove that I’m in good shape. Today, I was good and that gives me confidence for the rest of this race, but also with an eye on the rest of the season.”

Roglic said that he is not a time trial specialist after the stage. It could surprise some given his time trial victory in the Giro d’Italia and the Slovenian national title.

"I do not have to be the best in time trials. I want to do everything possible to be good in the mountains and grow into a classification rider.”

Roglic’s third place in the time trial, and leader’s jersey, came on the same day Victor Campenaerts won the time trial stage in Spain’s Ruta del Sol.

"It is nice to hear that Victor won. That means that we are doing the right things,” continued Roglic.

Lars Boom placed fifth today in Algarve, the team’s second best rider for the day. Boom sat a long time in the 'hot seat' until Tony Martin shaved some seconds off his time.
