Roglic powers to top 10 finish in Tirreno-Adriatico’s Terminillo stage

Primož Roglič sneaked into the top 10 in the hectic Tirreno-Adriatico up Monte Terminillo and moved to seventh overall. Roglič finished 10th at 51 seconds behind winner Nairo Quintana, who also took the leader’s jersey from Rohan Dennis.

“This is very good,” said Sports Director Addy Engels. “We were in the front in the right moments and the guys put Primož Roglič and Robert Gesink in the perfect spot for the final climb.

“Gesink attacked and Roglič lasted with the group of favourites. They gave everything and that resulted in a beautiful 10th spot for Roglič.”

Early in the stage, six men escaped without any of LottoNL-Jumbo’s men. Just ahead of the final climb, they where caught and the race opened again. Gesink lasted long on the final climb up Terminillo and lost contact with the group of favourites at five kilometres from the finish. A few kilometres earlier, he tried to escape, but the group marked his move. He crossed the finish line in 27th.

“Tomorrow is another super tough day and the time trial comes two days later, when Roglič can give his best,” added Engels. “He shows great potential.

“Of course, he won in the Volta ao Algarve, and this is a step up with all the WorldTour teams in Tirreno-Adriatico.”
