Steven Kruijswijk ninth in Vuelta a España

Team LottoNL-Jumbo ended the Vuelta a España with the ninth place for Steven Kruijswijk in the general classification. Juan José Lobato tried to sprint for the victory in the final stage, but he ultimately finished eleventh.

Like Antwan Tolhoek and Floris De Tier, Daan Olivier completed his first Grand Tour. “It was nice to experience my first Grand Tour as a member of a young team”, Olivier looked back. “We helped Steven as much as possible and we showed ourselves. I didn’t dare to think about competing in a race like this a year ago, when I started cycling again. I pushed my limits and I’m proud of that.”

Despite a bad start, Steven Kruijswijk succeeded to achieve a top ten classification. “My start wasn’t good at all, but I’m glad I could end the Vuelta well”, he concluded. “We fought back well. We went for a top ten classification and we managed to do so. We can be happy with that.”

Sports director Grischa Niermann shared that feeling. “We had a good Vuelta. Steven finished ninth after a bad opening. Furthermore, our young guys showed themselves. It is a pity that Lobato couldn’t compete for the victory in the final stage. Nevertheless we can look back on a good Vuelta. We ended up fifth in the team standings. It shows we achieved a high level during the past three weeks.”
