Steven Kruijswijk retains tenth in Giro overall

Steven Kruijswijk fought through the Giro d’Italia’s Sagrantino time trial today and held his 10th overall in the classification. Team LottoNL-Jumbo’s leader finished 20th, 2-43 minutes behind stage winner and new race leader Tom Dumoulin. LottoNL-Jumbo’s Jos van Emden placed ninth in the 39.8-kilometre time trial.


"I knew that today I could do nothing else but just give everything, and I did that," said Kruijswijk said at the finish in Montefalco. "I could push deep, but I do not have the greatest feeling. It was a difficult course for me. I gave everything.”


“I started the Giro with ambition and hoped to be better. I have to make it through this week and rely on my good shape in the third week."

"We’ve done a good time trial, but not a great one," said Sports Director Jan Boven. "We lost time on real specialists, but he finished among most other GC-riders. “Steven is just not at his best in this moment. We need to get through tomorrow’s stage before the flat stages in the following days. We expect that Steven will find his legs in the last week."


The team’s time trial star van Emden finished in 52-52, 2-15 behind Dumoulin. "This is not really a course that suits me. I would’ve rather have had the time trial before the rest day. It was difficult to get in the rhythm again."


"We are here with a clear goal, and that is supporting Steven as much as possible,” Belgian time trial champion Victor Campenaerts said. “Tomorrow will be a difficult day, so it's very important to help him. I'm a rider who can go deep in a time trial, which can result in a good outcome, but often it means I have a huge off-day a day later. I need to help Steven tomorrow and that's why the team and I planned this 'extra rest day'.
