Twan Castelijns in the attack during Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic

Twan Castelijns was in the breakaway during the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic. The 28-year-old rider managed to stay ahead for a long time, but was caught after the third KOM-sprint. Eventually, the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff took the victory in London. His fellow-countryman Amund Grondahl Jansen was Team LottoNL-Jumbo’s best rider at the 27th place.

After many attacks, Twan Castelijns made it to the breakaway with four other riders. “I wanted to show myself and therefore wanted to be in the breakaway”, Castelijns said afterwards. “It took some time, but after thirty kilometres, I eventually succeeded.”

The leading group was soon reduced to three riders. Nevertheless, the escapees didn’t get much space. “Therefore, I aimed at the intermediate sprints. I was in front each time, but Mads Würtz Schmidt was stronger and took the KOM-price. Despite this, I’m happy with my performance today.”

The peloton caught the escapees eighty kilometres before the finish. Afterwards, Amund Grondahl Jansen tried to participate in the bunch sprint. “His teammates tried to help him as well as possible, but he wasn’t well positioned in the end”, stated sports director Merijn Zeeman. “That’s something to learn from for the upcoming races. Anyway, it’s nice that we showed ourselves in a good way today.”
