Van Poppel cut off in second bunch sprint Tour of Poland

Danny van Poppel did not really get to sprint in the second stage of the Tour of Poland. The 25-year-old sprinter of Team LottoNL-Jumbo started the sprint early, but was cut off in full sprint by the later winner. Eventually, he crossed the finish line as twelfth.

The stage to Katowice was a copy of yesterday’s stage. An early breakaway was caught in the final after which the sprint teams took control. Once again, Van Poppel was well-placed by Lars Boom, Gijs van Hoecke and Tom Leezer.

“The lead-out went well”, sports director Grischa Niermann said. “The team did a perfect job and Danny was well-positioned for the sprint. Yesterday, he had to start his sprint from too far, this time he was where he needed to be. Unfortunately, there was a gap after which Tom had to start the sprint and Danny had to leave his wheel too early. We take the positives from this. The lead-out is going better every day. Tomorrow, there’s another chance. We’ll keep trying.”
